Accomplishments to Date-Feb 2015
Henderson Historical Society (HHS) is in the mood to brag.
We are especially proud of:
- Our assistance to broadcast media – HHS helped local NBC Channel 3 News reporter Tom Hawley cover stories about the Three Kids Mine cleanup, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Pepcon explosion and a story on the growth of Henderson. For an instant replay go to The Video Vault on local Channel 3.
- Our assistance to local newspapers – HHS collaborated with The Henderson View, finding facts and photos for writer Sandy Lopez’s story about Henderson school namesake, Doris Reed. We partnered with View writer Michael Lyle on stories about Harriet Clements Treem, another Henderson school namesake. HHS gathered and organized longtime Henderson residents for writer Lyle’s fine story about Henderson history, change, and growth that also appeared in the View. These stories are available here.
- Our outreach to Henderson Schools – HHS assisted Robert Taylor Elementary School children with an oral history program where students interviewed Henderson residents with memories of the 1940s and 1950s. The students recorded the stories and shared them online at Henderson Libraries.
- Our collaboration with local government – The Society works with the City of Henderson and Henderson District Public Libraries, finding Henderson pioneers for oral histories and collecting and describing historic photos.
- Our sponsorship of Cultural Events – The Henderson Historical Society sponsors a Heritage Days event that has been well received by pioneer families and newcomers alike. The focal point of this event has been a sharing of stories, photos and an assortment of memorabilia for preserving Henderson history. It is held at the Gibson Library.
- Our sponsorship of Henderson Speaks Events – History makers and pioneers share their memories of Henderson history at a public presentation. HHS archives the events and makes them available online through Henderson Libraries.
HHS members have been guest speakers at Rotary Club in Henderson and Green Valley, the Museum Guild, and UNLV Oral History Research Center events. We serve on City of Henderson committees where history expertise is needed. HHS was an active participant in the State of Nevada celebration of its sesquicentennial.
